Why the programme asks
for one habit, not ten

25 OCTOBER 2026 · ADRIAN VAN IERSEL · ~3 MIN READ

Most energy advice fails in the same place: week two. The plan was built for a person with no job, no weather and no bad nights. The programme takes a different starting point — small, specific, and allowed to miss.

Plans beat intentions

Established, stated plainly: specific if-then plans increase follow-through. "After I pour my coffee, I will step outside for five minutes" outperforms "I should get more daylight", because the cue does the remembering for you.

Early research suggests habits are slow — and forgiving

Early research suggests habit automaticity develops over weeks to months, with wide individual variation — and that missing a single day does not reset the process. Early research also suggests small, consistent changes are more likely to last than large ones, and that adding many new habits at once lowers adherence. None of that is a promise; all of it points the same direction.

The missed day is part of the plan

That is why the programme treats a missed challenge as normal — normal enough that Day 7 is about it. Quit, catch up frantically, or take one small next step? Early research suggests pursuing many goals at once reduces adherence to each, so the programme's answer is the small step. There are no streaks to break and no catch-up debt to pay; the daily check-in is optional by design.

What this looks like in practice

If you take one thing from this note, take the shape: one behaviour, tied to a cue you already have, small enough to survive a bad week, with explicit permission to skip. Then, when it holds, protect it — before adding the next one. The programme's own Day 55 puts it best: simplify before you add.
